Hrísey island

13th August

After exchanging the car this morning for a Suzuki Grand Vitara (to allow us to do the highland crossing), we took a trip to the island of Hrísey, to see the ptarmigan. On the ferry trip out we saw some very large jellyfish, in very clear water, trailing red, white & yellow tentacles 2m, possibly more, long. On the island, besides beautiful views of the mountains on the peninsulae on each side of the bay : golden plover, arctic terns & a bird of prey. Afterwards a spot of 10-pin bowllng in town.

Cloudy to start, but brightening to a sunny-ish afternoon before showers in the late evening Another sunny day with little wind. All ready for an adventurous day tomorrow: Rowena & Dad going rafting, Clara going horse riding, then we're doing halfway on the route 35 Kjolor route - a "highland crossing", where we will be spending the night in hveravellir (more hot springs next to glaciers)
